This article on Trouble Coffee in the Outer Sunset and the hipster toast trend is worth a read. It takes some things that seem very San Francisco – an adorably named coffeeshop, an overpriced artisanal product – and grounds them in the reality of why so many interesting weirdos come to San Francisco. It’s also a reminder that the “hipsters are taking over!” kneejerk coverage on local blogs is there to get pageviews, not to thoughtfullly consider the lady that named her coffeeshop after her struggles with mental illness and serves food that reminds her of home and comfort.
I’m not saying that $4 isn’t a lot to pay for toast, but let’s remember that we get to decide what things mean to us, not others. Build your own damn house.
